Colourlock – Frequently Asked Questions Leather Care

Colourlock-Leather care

Which COLOURLOCK product is right for my car leather?

It mainly depends on the leather type and age. For most modern car interiors (pigmented/coated smooth leather) start with a mild cleaner for regular dirt or a strong cleaner for heavy soiling. Then add protection: for new leather (often the first ~3 years) use a leather sealant to reduce abrasion and dye transfer, while older leather benefits more from a protector lotion with UV and antioxidant protection.

What is the difference between Leather Protector and Leather Sealant?

Leather Sealant is mainly for new smooth leather, focusing on protection against abrasion, wear and dye transfer. Leather Protector is a care and protection lotion often used on older smooth leather, helping to slow ageing and fading thanks to antioxidants and UV filters.

How do I repair cracks in car leather (basics) with suitable kits?

As a rule, small cracks/tears can be repaired as long as the leather substance is still there. A typical repair kit includes cleaner, degreaser, filler and colour. Basic workflow: clean, degrease, smooth the edges, build filler in thin layers, recreate texture if needed, apply colour refresher/dye, and finally protect again (protector or sealant depending on leather age/condition). For large tears or missing material, professional upholstery repair is often best.

Is COLOURLOCK suitable for leather furniture?

Yes. COLOURLOCK is designed for automotive and furniture leather, and many kits/solutions are explicitly suitable for both.

What is the difference between mild and strong cleaner?

Mild is for regular cleaning and normal dirt. Strong is for heavy soiling or stubborn build-up. Best practice: start with mild and only move to strong if needed.

Can I use COLOURLOCK on artificial leather?

Yes, many COLOURLOCK solutions are also suitable for artificial leather. Use products intended for synthetic/vinyl surfaces. Leather greases (like Elephant) are not suitable for PU-coated materials.

What is Elephant leather grease and what is it used for?

Elephant Leather Preserver is a fully synthetic, acid-free leather grease that protects, impregnates and cares for leather. It is especially used for older, dry or robust smooth leather and is also known in the context of conservation/preservation.

How often should I protect or condition my car leather?

It depends on use and high-contact areas (driver seat/steering wheel need it more often). As a rough guideline, Leather Protector is often used around every 6 months depending on wear. For new leather, the focus is usually on protection (sealant) rather than heavy conditioning.

Product range at a glance

1) Cleaning

For regular cleaning of (surface-coated) smooth leather, choose a cleaner strength that matches the soiling level: Leather Cleaner mild for normal dirt and Leather Cleaner strong for heavier buildup.

2) Protecting and caring

New leather is best protected against abrasion and dye transfer, which is why Leather Sealant is a classic choice. For older or heavily used leather, a care product with UV protection and antioxidants is recommended, such as Leather Protector Milk.

3) Special cases and long-term protection

For very dry, older leather and maximum impregnation, many users rely on Elephant Leather Preserver. To protect textiles, carpets, floor mats, or convertible tops against dirt and liquids, use a textile sealant such as Allround Textile Sealant St0.01.

COLOURLOCK by leather type

Smooth leather

The most common type in car interiors: a clean-then-protect routine works especially well. Beginner recommendation: Colourlock Smooth leather maintenance kit mild.

Aniline leather and nubuck

Open-pore and sensitive leathers require especially gentle methods. For greasy spots and careful degreasing (always test in a hidden area first), use: Colourlock Leather cleaning petrol.

Synthetic leather and Alcantara

These materials benefit from dedicated cleaners and protectants instead of all-purpose products. For Alcantara and textiles: Colourlock Alcantara and Textile Cleaner 500 ml. For grained synthetic leather and plastic surfaces: Colourlock Synthetic leather and plastic care set.

Suede and velour

Gentle cleaning and minimal moisture are key to preserve the look and feel. For brushing, aligning the fiber, and gentle cleaning support: Colourlock Leather / Textile cleaning brush.

Use cases

  • Car interiors: seats, steering wheels, light leather, and high-contact areas.
  • Classic and modern classics: gentle care and restoration.
  • Convertibles: protect textiles and soft tops.
  • Leather furniture as well as fashion and accessories: many products are suitable there too.

Quick guide: How to pick the right product

  1. Identify the material (smooth leather, open-pore, synthetic leather, Alcantara).
  2. Assess the soiling level (mild or strong cleaner).
  3. Then protect: seal newer leather, condition older leather.
  4. Always test first on a hidden area.
