COLOURLOCK Leather Steering Wheel Set Black - restore a black leather steering wheel

The COLOURLOCK Leather Steering Wheel Set Black is designed for worn and scratched black leather steering wheels. The system covers cleaning, surface preparation, colour refresh and final protection.

Leather Fresh restores the black surface in several thin coats. After complete drying, Leather Shield provides protection against renewed wear. The included Elephant Leather Preserver can be used additionally on older leather when appropriate.

Application

Clean the steering wheel with Leather Cleaner Mild, remove residue with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely.
Smooth rough areas carefully with the Sanding Pad and degrease the surface with Degreaser.
Shake Leather Fresh well, dab on thin coats and dry each coat with moderate heat from a hair dryer.
Allow at least 24 hours after colouring. On suitable older leather, use Elephant Leather Preserver sparingly if required.
Apply Leather Shield thinly and allow it to dry to protect the surface against renewed wear.

COLOURLOCK Leather Steering Wheel Set Black - detailed application instructions

Preparation

Park the vehicle securely, switch off the ignition and prevent unintended steering-wheel movement. Keep hands and adjacent parts clean.
Wear suitable protective gloves. Test all products in the prescribed sequence on a hidden spot.
Carefully mask adjacent plastics, switches, emblems and contrasting seams.
Fill the foamer bottle with Leather Cleaner. Prepare clean cloths, the sponge, sanding pad, Degreaser and a hairdryer.

Step-by-step application

Apply cleaning foam to the sponge, never directly to the steering wheel. Clean the entire leather rim in sections.
Pick up dirt and cleaner residue with a slightly damp cloth. Allow the leather to dry completely.
Smooth rough and worn areas with the Sanding Pad using low pressure. Do not grind deeply into the grain.
Place Degreaser on a clean cloth and wipe all hand-contact areas thoroughly. Allow it to evaporate and dry fully.
Use an adhesive-tape test to check for remaining grease. If the tape adheres poorly, repeat degreasing and allow the surface to dry again.
Shake Leather Fresh Black vigorously, place it on the sponge and apply it in very thin dabbing coats.
Dry each coat with a moving hairdryer at moderate temperature. Apply further thin coats until the colour is even.
Allow the recoloured steering wheel to dry for 24 hours and avoid using it during this period where possible.
On an older, dry steering wheel, optionally apply Elephant Leather Preserver very thinly with a cloth, leave it overnight and buff off excess the next day.
Apply Leather Shield no earlier than after the 24-hour drying period. Use a few drops on the sponge, spread thinly and evenly, and do not rub hard. One coat is normally sufficient.
Dry Leather Shield with a moving hairdryer and remove masking only after the surface is fully dry.

Aftercare and maintenance

Inspect heavily used steering wheels about every three months and reapply Leather Shield after cleaning if required.
For normal use, the typical protection interval is six to twelve months.
Completely remove hand grease and dirt before any later protective treatment.

Important information

Treat surface-coloured smooth leather only. Do not use on suede, Alcantara or open-pored aniline leather.
A smooth, severely hardened, cracked or safety-critical damaged steering wheel requires professional assessment.
The steering wheel, controls and airbag cover must not remain slippery or contaminated with product residue.
