veryone has experienced the pleasant scent of old leather, but nowadays, it's rare to find leather that exudes this lovely smell. In the past, leather was tanned differently. Plant-based tanning was the main method, and the tanning and fatliquoring agents used gave the leather a distinctive odor. Today, most automotive, furniture, and clothing leathers are chrome-tanned. The result of this tanning method is more or less odorless leather, with only a faint natural smell. Some of the previously used odor-producing substances are now even banned, particularly certain nitro-musk compounds that strongly characterized the scent of leather.
Some new leathers from bags, belts, and jackets have a strongly unpleasant smell. This can occur if low-quality fish oils or other foul-smelling substances were used in the manufacturing process. This issue is more common with inexpensive products. Unfortunately, this smell is usually impossible to remove, so such items should either be avoided or quickly returned.
For customers with odorless leather or whose old leather no longer smells like leather, the Leather Center has created a leather scent called Leather Essence, developed by a perfumer.
